Bicocca Autoimmune Liver Disease Center: data analysis of 12 thousand patients from around the world

Artificial Intelligence in the Service of Medical Research in Hepatology. A research conducted by the Center for Autoimmune Liver Diseases, University of Milan-Bicocca, at the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, and by Rulex’s Data Science team in Genoa, identified Four new subtypes of Primary Biliary Cholangitis (CBP). based on the Clinical data from more than 12 thousand subjects from around the world. The new algorithm joins existing prognostic scores and enables improved prognostic assessment of patients as early as at the time of diagnosis.

CBP is a liver disease that, although rare, affects more than 10,000 people in Italy, mostly women over 40 years of age. Over the past decade there has been a progressive improvement in the prognostic stratification of patients with CBP, thanks in part to the development of scores and calculators.

Recently, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have been applied with benefit in the study of common diseases: from infections to cardiovascular disease, from breast cancer to colorectal cancer. However, in the context of rare diseases, and CBP specifically, there was a lack of experimental evidence in relation to these new technologies and their applications.

The team from the Center for Autoimmune Liver Diseases in Monza led by Professor Pietro Invernizzi used Rulex, an innovative data analysis tool which employs a sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithm developed by the research and development team of Rulex, coordinated by CEO Marco Muselli, and based on a theoretical model developed within the CNR Institute of Electronics, Information Engineering and Telecommunications in Genoa, Italy.
