New projects using the PBC database have recently started in the following areas:

 

AIM-PBC

The study ‘AutoImmune and Metabolic Comorbidities in the Natural History of PBC’ (AIM-PBC) investigates the impact of extrahepatic comorbidities, both autoimmune and metabolic, on the course of primary biliary cholangitis. Through the analysis of data from more than 2,500 patients included in the National PBC Network, the study assesses how these conditions influence clinical presentation, treatment response, disease progression, and the occurrence of adverse clinical events, thereby contributing new evidence for improved patient management.

Fibrates

PBC patients who do not respond adequately to ursodesoxycholic acid (UDCA) therapy have an increased risk of disease progression. Previous studies have indicated benefits from the use of fibrates in patients with this condition.

This project aims to evaluate the efficacy of fibrates in a cohort of PBC patients, specifically the specific impact on liver biochemical parameters and liver stiffness, as well as on adverse events and treatment discontinuation.

Noninvasive testing in patients with PBC

Noninvasive tests (NITs) and liver stiffness measurement entered clinical practice more than 20 years ago to diagnose liver fibrosis in patients with compensated disease. Their evolution over the years has made them essential tools for risk stratification of portal hypertension and liver-related events. In this context, the project aims to provide more precise and targeted directions for performing gastroscopies, thus contributing to better clinical management of patients.
